Welcome Message

Big enough to challenge, small enough to care

Choosing the right place for your post 16 study is an important and exciting decision, and I am delighted that you are considering joining our Maricourt Sixth Form community. I hope this Sixth Form area of our website gives you the information and guidance needed to help you reach this decision. We also welcome you to our Sixth Form Open Evening on Thursday 10th January, where you will have the opportunity to meet the Sixth Form pastoral team, teaching staff and speak to our students who are studying here at Maricourt Sixth Form.

Maricourt Sixth Form is a welcoming and inclusive environment where each student continues to be known and valued as an individual and is encouraged to develop their unique talents to the full. We are very proud of the fact that so many of our students choose to continue their education at Maricourt on completion of their GCSE courses and we are also pleased to welcome students from other schools, who wish to benefit from the fantastic opportunities Maricourt offers. We pride ourselves on the personalised care, support and guidance we offer to each and every one of our sixth form students.

We offer a wide choice of 23 A Level and Vocational subjects, all of which are taught by specialist staff. Vocational courses in Business Studies, Sport and Health Studies are also available as double options. The minimum entry requirements for each subject are outlined in the prospectus section of our website. Unlike many other Post 16 providers, our students have the option to choose a combination of academic A Levels and Vocational qualifications. Our students value the careers education, information, advice and guidance on offer to them, enabling a successful transition into university, training or employment. If you choose to join our Sixth Form we will help you to achieve your potential, in whatever field that might be. Further information in this Sixth Form area of our website will give advice to students who have a specific career pathway in mind, such as Medicine and Law.

Students are supported by teaching and learning that is of the highest quality, and by the academic and pastoral support of a team of experienced personal tutors, providing one-to-one guidance. We have also extended the study facilities for the Sixth Form, including a dedicated study area which is available from 8.00am to 5.30pm every day.

Our excellent examination results leads to high progression rates to University. In 2017, the majority of students left to study at their chosen university, including Liverpool, Newcastle, Sheffield, Loughborough, Lancaster and Manchester, where they are studying a wide range of subjects, including Law, Pharmacy, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Criminology, and Forensic Psychology. Those that chose a vocational route progressed on to quality apprenticeships and School Leaver Programmes, such as Accountancy in RSM.

However, our Sixth Form is about more than academic excellence; we provide our students with a wealth of enrichment and extra-curricular activities which significantly enhances our students' academic study. We are particularly proud of our programme of enrichment which is highly valued by our students; this includes the opportunity to work towards a qualification in Mandarin, complete the 'Teachers of Tomorrow' programme, or to train towards a sports leader award. Sixth Form students play a full part in the wider life of the school as prefects, members of the School Council, mentors to our younger students, and guides and ambassadors during open evenings, school performances and parent evenings.

Our students are capable of great things, and this demands hard work, resilience, self-discipline and a high level of personal commitment. As a school Sixth Form, with a dedicated and expert pastoral team, we can provide the structures and support which students need to cultivate these qualities which will lead to success, both in school and in the world of work.
