"Everyone should learn how to code, it teaches you how to think." Steve Jobs
The mission of the Computer Science and IT department is to equip our students with practical and useful Computer Science
and IT skills that will prepare them for further study and a range of careers. With digital literacy being imperative in the
modern day world we ensure these skills are being taught alongside the theoretical and programming content of Computer
Science. We strive to prepare students to participate in a rapidly changing world in which work and other activities are
increasingly transformed by access to varied and developing technology.

Key Stage 3
The National Curriculum for Computing and IT underpins learning at KS3. The units of work are designed to build upon the key
skills and concepts of the framework each year to consolidate learning by the end of year 9. The KS3 scheme of learning includes
Computer Systems, Data management, Computational Logic and Programming units. Each year students build on their knowledge and
understanding from the previous year’s content. The Computer Systems unit involves students understanding the key concepts of
Hardware, Software and Networking. The Data Management development of practical skills using Spreadsheets in MS Excel and
Databases in MS Access and looks at key skills of data storage and analysis. The final unit of Programming develops knowledge
of algorithms and practical skills through programming in Small Basic and Python programming languages.
Key Stage 4
The students have the opportunity to develop their base skills in further detail and develop expertise in either Computer Science or IT.
OCR GCSE Computer Science
Computer Science is engaging and practical, encouraging creativity and problem solving. It encourages students to develop their understanding and
application of the core concepts in Computer Science. Students also analyse problems in computational terms and devise creative solutions by designing,
writing, testing and evaluating programs.
OCR Cambridge Nationals in Information Technologies
Cambridge National in Information Technologies improves students’ knowledge of the digital environment and their confidence with IT.
They learn about data management issues and develop practical skills by planning and creating an integrated technological solution to
communicate information.
Sixth Form
Our students are afforded the opportunity to develop Computer Science and IT skills to a professional level in preparation for further
education or employment in industry.
OCR A Level Computer Science
Computer Science helps students understand the core academic principles of Computer Science. Classroom learning is transferred into creating
real-world systems through the creation of an independent programming project. This A Level will develop the student’s technical understanding
and their ability to analyse and solve problems using computational thinking.
OCR Cambridge Technicals in Information Technology
Cambridge Technicals in IT provides students with essential knowledge and skills in IT and cybersecurity. A wide range of units and opportunities
for practical and project-based work helps students gain an insight into technological change, global IT infrastructure and legal and security
considerations.
