Careers Bulletin Half Term 6

Dear Parents / Guardians,

Year 7

The students enjoyed an enrichment day at Chester Zoo in which they learned all about the history and origin of animals. They looked at the habitats, discussing how a better world can be created for the wildlife and to prevent extinction relating to the types of jobs involved at the zoo. The whole of the Year 7 cohort visited Edge Hill University and had a great day. They engaged in taster sessions, visited a lecture theatre followed by a full campus tour which they all enjoyed.

Zoo Lab also came into Maricourt to introduce the students across Year 7 and 8 to some of the animals from the Tropical Rainforest. It was a fantastic opportunity to bring their Geography curriculum to life. Well done to all involved.

Year 8

Students enjoyed an enrichment day at Blackpool pleasure beach. They were able to view all the various rides and attractions, making links with careers and technology involved to create the enjoyment factor and thrill of enjoying the rides which they certainly all enjoyed.

Zoo Lab came into Maricourt to introduce the students across Year 7 and 8 to some of the animals from the Tropical Rainforest. It was a fantastic opportunity to bring their Geography curriculum to life. Year 8 students said "Very good session, really enjoyed holding the animals and learning more about them. I even got a hand massage from the millipede!!".

Year 8 cohort engaged in a creative writing enterprise task. Students developed team working and communication skills as well as creativity. There were some fantastic presentations and those students who were confident enough to deliver really impressed our partners from The Jockey Club & Racing to School. One group devised a full commentary for Rachael Blackmore's historic win last year as she became the first female jockey to win the Grand National. They then performed this in horse racing commentary style.

Three Year 8 students and two Year 9 students attended a celebration event for the Premier League Challenge event that they won the club heats for earlier in the year. They got to tour Goodison Park, speak to other schools from different winning clubs and meet ex-Liverpool player Chris Kirkland.

A group of fifteen Year 8 boys who have been working with Julia (our EITC tutor) for the past 15 weeks attended an event at Goodison Park to showcase their ideas for apps. Competing against numerous other schools, one group won the award for 'App Functionality' with their idea of an inclusive app for supporters of all clubs. Congratulations!

Some Year 8 students also had the opportunity of attending the University of Liverpool for a full campus tour and enjoyed watching Science experiments in a lecture theatre setting. This has inspired them in advance of thinking about Year 9 option subjects.

Year 9

Some Year 9 students also had the opportunity of attending the University of Liverpool for a full campus tour and enjoyed watching science experiments in a lecture theatre setting. This has given them lots to think about as they get ready to move into key stage four.

Students enjoyed an enrichment day at Blackpool pleasure beach similar to Year 8 in which they were also able to view all the various rides and attractions making links with careers and technology involved, to create the enjoyment factor and thrill of enjoying the rides which they all certainly enjoyed.

Two Year 9 students attended a celebration event for the Premier League Challenge event due to the fact they had previously won the club heats for earlier in the year. Well done!

Year 10

A selection of students was given an opportunity to visit Southport College. The students had selected various taster sessions such as, ‘beauty, gaming, childcare, fashion, engineering and bricklaying’. They were then taken on a full campus tour and thoroughly enjoyed the day.

Year 10 have been out on work experience placements which I am sure they will be enjoying and learning new skills. This will be an enriching experience and one which will support them in Year 11 when creating their CV’s and writing personal statements in the future. We look forward to their return on Monday and hearing all about their experiences.

Year 11

It was that time of year again in which our Year 11s got to put all their hard work, revision skills and determination into sitting their GCSE examinations and we sadly had to prepare to say farewell. They had a fantastic prom celebration and were all dressed very smartly. We wish them the best of luck in their results and planning their post 16 destinations. Good luck Year 11 and feel free to contact the Careers department if you have any questions or require any further advice from our Careers adviser Mrs Gresham. Keep your eye on the ‘Show my homework noticeboard area’. This is where I will continue to advertise the latest career information, work experience opportunities, virtual placements and latest apprenticeship opportunities that arise.

Sixth Form

Year 12 all attended the UCAS exhibition event in Liverpool in which they were able to attend Live application clinics and personal statement workshops, view courses and engage in careers taster sessions and student talks. They also go to hear expert advice on how to research and choose what’s right for them and had the opportunity to explore and meet universities, colleges and employers face-to-face. Year 12 also attended an enrichment activity at Blackpool Pleasure beach which gave them the opportunity to view the attractions and discuss the types of jobs and careers involved in ride and attraction development, looking at the technology and marketing areas of jobs.

In addition to Year 10, they have also been out on work experience placement which they have sourced throughout the year. We hope that they have enjoyed their time on placement. This is a fantastic opportunity for them to learn new skills and further develop current skills in communication, networking, multi-tasking and planning.

We have also run sessions for our students in equality in employment and positive mind set talks delivered by Judy Hastings. In addition to those talks we also had presentations from the Anthony Walker foundation to the Year groups.
